1 January – Plans were drawn up to merge Snam Spa into the organisational and company structure of Eni Spa.
February – Eni was nominated the single operator for the Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) relating to the North Caspian Sea project, in the Kazako offshore area, and for delimiting the Kashagan deposits.
February – An agreement was perfected with the National Iranian Oil Company to develop the Balal oil field in the Persian Gulf.
March – An agreement was signed with BP and EGPC (Egyptian General Petroleum Company) to develop a natural gas liquefaction plant on the Mediterranean coast.
1 July – The transportation and despatching of gas and the regasification of LNG operations carried out by Snam Spa were transferred to Snam Rete Gas Spa.
July – Drilling operations began in the Wafa field in Libya.
October – Praoil Oleodotti Italiani brought into service the 136-kilometre Monte Alpi oil pipeline connecting the Oil Centre at Viggiano, in Val D’Agri, to the Eni refinery in Taranto.
December – Production started at the Okono oil field, in Nigeria.
Work began on the development project for the Kizomba A offshore oil deposits, situated in an area north-east of Luanda, in Angola, with production starting up from the Hungo and Chocalho oil fields thanks to the construction of a platform and the installation of a floating production storage and offloading ship (FPSO).
