March – The “Mount Skukum” mine in the Yukon area in Canada commenced producing precious metals.
May – Mining research operations in southern Africa favoured the exploitation of the Strathrae mine.
October – Eni transferred its metallurgical operations to Nuova Samim Spa, in order to coordinate all the companies operating in the sector.
10 November – A sub-holding, Agip Miniere Spa, entirely controlled by Agip, was set up in order take charge of all the non-oil mining operations in the sector.
18 December – Shares in Nuovo Pignone Spa were traded for the first time on the Milan, Rome and Florence stock exchanges.
December – Samim Spa was merged into Agip, in order to provide the latter with foreign mining operations and a stake in Mining Italiana and Aquater e Ri. min. Spa.
December – Mining research and production in Italy was transferred to Società Italiana Miniere Spa.
The finishing touches were put to new ground-breaking technology in the deep-water production sector, such as the SWACS acoustic signalling system.
The refining operations in the Agip Petroli sector were transferred to Irom Spa, which subsequently changed its name to Agip Raffinazione Spa.
