January - Snam signed a technical-economic agreement with the USSR for importing 8 billion cubic metres of gas per year.
February – The Council of Ministers approved a law to assign to Snam financial integration at the expense of the State.
May – Agip Coal USA was set up, in conjunction with Enoxy Coal, to carry out commercial operations in the coal market in the United States.
27 September - The Italian government signed an agreement with the Algerian government, fixing a price of US $4.41 per million BTU for Algerian gas at the border.
December – Eni signed an agreement with Montedison for the purchase of basic chemical and ethylene plant and plastics.
Agip Carbone purchased a share in the Newcastle (GB) coal terminal, together with a share in the development of the coal terminal at Richard Bay (ZA).
