January - Eni arranged a series of meetings aimed at reorganising, converting and developing Egam (independent authority for the management of metallurgical mining companies).
24 March - Eni purchased the entire share capital of the company, Chimica e Fibra del Tirso, with the aim of promoting the management overhaul and reconversion of the state-owned fibre sector.
April – Work began on the geo-mineral study of Calabria, as part of the Calabria Convention.
October - Snam, in a consortium with European gas companies, signed an agreement with the Nigerian company, Bonny Lng Ltd., for the purchase, liquefaction and transportation of natural gas to Europe (including Italy), subject to approval by the government.
28 November - Law 784 entrusted Eni with the task of managing the group controlled by Sir Finanziaria and the plant belonging to the Liquigas-Liquichimica group.
19 December - Metano Città Spa was set up in Milan, for the construction and management of natural gas networks for civil use and for small-scale companies.
