15 January – Mattei visited the President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah.
24 January - Sitep (Societé Italo-Tunisienne d’Exploitation Pétrolière) was set up. The new oil company, jointly-owned by Agip and the Tunisian state, was at the time the most concrete example of the application of the Mattei Formula.
11 May – The pipe-laying ship, Ragno, was launched at Venice.
9-13 June – The Agip Liberia Corporation and Agip Togo S.A were set up for the marketing and distribution of petroleum products.
12 August – Agip Nigeria Ltd. Was set up for the distribution and marketing of petroleum products.
24 August – The Perro Negro base camp at Marina di Carrara was inaugurated.
29 August - Eni signed an agreement with the Indian government for collaboration in the oil and petrochemical sector.
18 October - Mattei inaugurated work on the construction of the Europa Centrale oil pipeline.
The Samir refinery, Société Anonyme Marocaine Italienne de Raffinage, at Mohammedia entered production.
