11 January – Law no. 6 concerning the exploration and development of liquid and gas hydrocarbons in Italy came into force.
February - Mattei met the Egyptian Industry Minister, Aziz Sedki.
14 March – Agip Mineraria and Nioc (National Iranian Oil Company) of Teheran signed an agreement to set up Sirip (Société Irano-Italiènne des Pétroles), to search for oil in the Persian Gulf.
March – Mattei had an official meting with the Libyan Prime Minister, Mustafà Ben Halim.
March – SIMEA (South Italy atomic energy company) was set up with capital underwritten by Agip Nucleare and the Iri group for the construction and management of the first nuclear power station in Italy, at Borgo Sabotino in Latina.
28 June – Sapir, Società Porto Industriale di Ravenna Spa, was set up.
6 September - Mattei and Gronchi visited Iran where they met the Shah of Persia, Reza Pahlavi.
16 October - Asseil, a Libyan oil company, was set up in Tripoli for the distribution in Libya of Agip petroleum products.
31 December – Saip and Snam Montaggi were incorporated into the newly-set up Saipem, Italian drilling and assembling company.
