10 February - Eni, Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi (national hydrocarbon authority), was founded with law 136, which came into force on 11 April 1953.
February - SISI, Sviluppo Iniziative Stradali Italiane (Italian road development initiative), was founded with the objective of studying the problems connected to developing and improving the motorway network in Italy, in a joint venture involving Eni, Fiat, Pirelli and Italcementi.
4 March - Enrico Mattei was nominated Chairman of Eni and subsequently resigned as a member of parliament.
30 May - Agip Mineraria was founded and awarded exclusive mining rights in Valle Padana, together with research permits and shares in minor companies (Saip, Vulcano, Ravennate Metano, Mineraria Sicilia Orientale and Mineraria Somala).
October - Eni commenced exploration activities abroad when it began operations in Somalia.
December – Snam’s transportation network, run in conjunction with its affiliate Amp, covered an area of over 3,000 kilometres.
